CES 2014: Welcoming Pebble Steel, Pebble appstore, and new partners to the Family

Two thousand and thirteen was an incredible year for Pebble. We shipped to our Kickstarter backers; landed at Best Buy, AT&T, and Amazon; enabled iOS 7 notifications; launched SDK 2.0; and more—all thanks to amazing support from Pebblers and developers like you.

Our running start to 2013 happened right here at CES when we showed Pebble publicly for the very first time. Today, with over 300,000 Pebbles on wrists all over the world, we’re back in Las Vegas with really great news to share.

First, we’re getting ready to launch the Pebble appstore—the very first open platform for sharing apps optimized for wearables. The appstore will live within the existing Pebble app on your iOS or Android device, so you can find and download Pebble apps directly from your smartphone.

Pebble appstore device lineup

Until now, Pebblers discovered apps and watchfaces thanks to wonderful third party resources like MyPebbleFaces. In fact, 3 million apps and watchfaces have been downloaded so far.

By the end of January, the Pebble appstore will offer a centralized location for users to discover, manage, and install apps and watchfaces.

Pebble appstore makes browsing easy, with categories for Daily, Remotes, Games, Notifications, Tools & Utilities, Fitness, and—of course—Watchfaces. We’re making it easier than ever to find your next favorite app for things like tracking your workout, managing your music, or controlling your thermostat.

In addition to being a simple one-stop shop, we’ll be curating the Pebble appstore, bringing the latest and greatest apps and watchfaces to your wrist in no time. Developers who want their Pebble apps in the appstore at launch must submit them by January 9.

Second, we’re delighted to introduce Pebble Steel: our new, premium smartwatch. With Pebble, we created an iconic, colorful, and sporty smartwatch, but we wanted to build something even more refined—cranking the style dial to 11.

Introducing Pebble Steel

Pebble Steel takes everything you know and love about Pebble—the crystal clear ePaper display, weeklong battery life, and waterproof design—and wraps it a smaller, thinner package. It’s made of forged and CNC-machined stainless steel.

Pebble and Pebble Steel

Pebble welcomes Steel to the family.

The display is protected by a Corning Gorilla Glass lens with an oleophobic, anti-fingerprint coating. The housing also subtly incorporates a RGB LED light to indicate charge status. Like the original Pebble, Pebble Steel is waterproof up to 5 ATM.

Pebble Steel comes in two finishes: Brushed Stainless and Black Matte. All models are bundled with both a matching metal band and a black leather strap. The Black Matte Pebble Steel is crafted using a process called Physical Vapor Deposition to provide a tactile, deep black finish that’s also ultra-durable.

Pebble Steel Launch Pricing

Starting today, you’ll be able to order Pebble Steel exclusively from getpebble.com for $249 US, which includes free courier shipping worldwide for early orders. Orders for Pebble Steel will begin shipping on January 28.

Third, we’re extremely proud to announce that Pandora, ESPN, and Mercedes-Benz are joining Yelp, Foursquare, GoPro, and iControl in our growing family of partners. We can’t wait to share the apps they’ve built to bring tiny moments of awesome to your Pebble everyday.

Pandora, iControl, and Mercedes-Benz will be demoing their Pebble apps with Pebble Steel here in Las Vegas. Please come take a look if you’re attending CES! For those who can’t make it in person, please watch Eric’s announcement video showcasing Pebble Steel and our partner apps.

We’re super excited about what the Pebble appstore, Pebble Steel, and our new partners bring to the table. Our mission is clear: create the gold standard for wearables that mesh perfectly with your everyday life, and build the fundamental ecosystem and platform for these devices.

Two thousand and thirteen was phenomenal for Pebble. Expect even more this year as we continue to improve our platform and listen to the feedback from our users and developers.

So, with two flavors of Pebble now in the world, who’s going to be starting a watch collection?

My pebble is on its way its a black one. Can i send back and order a Steel one?

The pre-order page states that each Pebble Steel comes with 2 straps, one metal and one leather. I’m curious if the leather strap is the same color for both. All the press photos I see so far show the leather strap on the Brushed Stainless Steal version (which I think looks very good), but I prefer the look of the Black Matte watch than the Brushed Stainless Steal watch with their respective matching metal bands. Just kinda curious what the Black Matte watch looks like with a leather band before deciding which to pre-order.

Leather strap is black for both Black Matte and Brushed Stainless.

Hey guys. It would be lovely if you removed the logo on the front. I respected the first pebble’s design a lot for not having it.

I think old style was needing fancy logos on fancy watches but when I think of a fancy thing now… I think no logo on the screen.

    Hi there,

the new Pebble Steel looks great! I’m really tempted to order one now…
I have just one little question: Is the LED RGB (meaning all kinds of colours) or is it tricolor (as in just 3 colours) as mentioned elsewhere here? Just some small detail but I’m curious…

I love all the new features and the design. The only exception is the non-removable Pebble logo on the front. It definitely makes it lot cheaper looking and will always bother me every time I look at the watch. I would love if it’s engraved on the metal buckle on the band instead.

Is the battery on the steel Pebble user replaceable?

I also agree with Greg, would look nicer without the logo.

    • Joseph   •

Hi Daniel! Like the original Pebble, Steel’s battery is not user-replaceable.
