Pebble’s Next Step

NOTE: This post has been updated to clarify refund timing for eligible backers receiving pledge reimbursements from Kickstarter.

Dear Pebblers,

Thank you all for being such loyal supporters and champions of the Pebble community and brand. You helped start something fantastic when you backed our first Kickstarter project (and shout-out to the first inPulse users). Since then, we’ve shipped over 2 million Pebbles around the world!

However—due to various factors—Pebble is no longer able to operate as an independent entity. We have made the tough decision to shut down the company and no longer manufacture Pebble devices. This news has several major implications, and we hope to answer as many questions as possible here, in Kickstarter Update #17, and on our Support site.

Moms Make Awesome Happen

Back in the day, Pebble started out as a team of five.

Happy mother's day

Jasmine and newest Pebble baby, Tristan, having a moment 🙂

As Team Pebble grows, we get to welcome and befriend both new colleagues and their families. Mother’s Day gives us a chance to show love to both Pebble’s Moms and the awesome moms everywhere. They’re the superheroes we look up to every day:

Happy mother's day

Started with our backers, now we’re here: Pebble hits the 1 million smartwatch milestone

Pebble CEO Eric Migicovsky gave the world a taste of what’s in store for 2015, on top of a big milestone all Pebblers can take pride in: shipping our 1 millionth smartwatch. We managed to get Pebble no. 1 million—a Brushed Stainless Pebble Steel—sent to us at HQ. Grumpy Cat wasn’t too impressed, but we love what this particular unit represents.

Grumpy Cat + 1MM Pebble

To the uninitiated, this Pebble Steel looks like any other. In our eyes, it’s a hallmark of where we’ve been and where we can go next, with Pebblers by our side. If you’ve got an idea about what we should do with this super-special Pebble Steel, give us a shout on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, the Pebble Forums, or on r/pebble!

Beyond the warm and fuzzies shipping our one millionth watch generated, we discovered a cool parallel between Pebble’s early performance and another iconic gadget’s: the iPod. Pebble sold 1MM smartwatches after its first seven quarters. Apple sold 977K iPods after its first seven quarters. That’s some good company to be in, eh?

Lights, Smartwatch, Action: Android Wear notifications come to Pebble (Release Notes)

UPDATE: The Pebble Android app (v2.3) with Android Wear compatibility is now out if Beta. Download it today on the Google Play Store.

Android Wear + Pebble

‘Tis the season for anticipation. We count down the days to gifts and good wishes, and we just can’t wait. We’ve been in the workshop ourselves, crafting something Android Pebblers will love unwrapping. Version 2.3 of our Android app gives Pebble the power to reply and act on notifications right from your watch. It’s Android Wear notification compatibility on Pebble, and it’s awesome.

Android users on our own team are super thrilled with what version 2.3 lets them do from their Pebbles. We’ve built actions that even Android Wear devices themselves don’t perform.

Reply to a Hangouts message with emoji? Thumbs up.

NOTE: A new update to the Hangouts app for Android requires downloading the Android Wear application to get replies working (even for Pebble—mawp).

How Pebble Kickstarted the Smartwatch: a Q&A with Eric Migicovsky

Pebble lineup on tabletop

Interested in how Pebble’s story and approach to wearable technology evolved from its humble beginnings, entrepreneur and author Michael Price recently visited Pebble HQ for a Huffington Post Q&A with our CEO, Eric Migicovsky. The piece touches on how feedback from inPulse—Eric’s earlier watch project which integrated with Blackberry phones—influenced Pebble’s direction and how a clear, authentic message helped its Kickstarter project succeed as much as it did.

Eric Migicovsky and the team that built the Pebble blazed trails and launched an entirely new product category into the market long before Google, Apple or Samsung came along.Huffinton Post

Two years after successfully crowdfunding Pebble on Kickstarter, interest in smartwatches and wearable technology continues to grow. There’s now a variety of approaches to how a meaningful wearable experience should look, feel, and perform on a daily basis.

Pebblers unite!
