Skip on Over to the Latest Pebble Firmware + iOS App (Release Notes)

Howdy, Pebblers!

The Team is happy to report two over-the-air updates we made available today: a Pebble firmware (v2.3) update for all Pebblers and an update to the Pebble iOS app (v.2.2.2) for those rocking Apple devices.

Aside from improved Bluetooth LE connectivity and the usual slate of stability improvements, the new firmware also adds notification skipping with a double-click.

This new feature lets you quickly jump to the next notification if the current one you’re viewing requires scrolling to see all the content. As before, if the notification you’re viewing is short and displays entirely on your Pebble, a single click is all it takes to go to the next one. To try out notification skipping for yourself:

  1. Update your Pebble to Firmware 2.3.
  2. Go to the Notifications app on your Pebble.
  3. Select a notification from your History, and click away!

The latest Pebble iOS App (v2.2.2) is a minor update, enabling more JavaScript apps to be available in the Pebble appstore. Pebble apps included in this latest bundle will be fully downloadable, and no longer say “Coming Soon” for iOS Pebblers.

Turn It Up for the New Pebble Firmware + iOS App Updates (Release Notes)

UPDATE: Post has been revised to clarify new capabilities introduced in the Pebble iOS App, v 2.2 and adds notes for what’s new in v 2.2.1.

Team Pebble is excited to debut two new features that give you deeper control over your Pebble’s App Menu and Music controls.

With the latest version (v2.2) of the Pebble Firmware released today, Pebblers can now take the items in the Launcher Menu and re-order them as they see fit.

Simply press and hold the Select button while in the Launcher to begin sorting a menu item. Once it starts shaking, you can move it up and down the list as you like!

Today’s firmware update also gives Pebblers new control over their music. You can finally control the volume! It’s been a long time since we first demoed volume control in the Pebble Music app back in the day (our iOS Engineer, Martijn, looks so young!), so we’re really glad to be bringing this feature onboard.

For iOS Pebblers, getting Volume Control to work also requires updating to the latest Pebble iOS App, released last week. As of this writing, the Pebble Firmware update has only just been made public. It may take time for what’s new to appear for you.

  1. To update your Pebble firmware, open your current Pebble smartphone app.
  2. To update your Pebble iOS app, visit the iTunes app store.

We hope you enjoy what’s new. Please keep us posted on Twitter, Facebook, or contact us directly about what you’d like to see next!

iOS 7 notifications update now available in the iTunes Store

We know you’ve all been patiently waiting for the iOS 7 notification update we announced last Wednesday, and we’re happy to report that it’s been approved by Apple. The latest Pebble app for iOS is now available for download in the iTunes Store!

As you probably know, this update seamlessly integrates Pebble with the Notification Center in iOS 7 and allows you to receive notifications from apps like Calendar, Twitter, Facebook, Google+, Instagram, LinkedIn, Flickr, Dropbox, WhatsApp, Flipboard and more.

If you’re a developer, don’t forget to visit the Pebble developer blog to learn about our much improved SDK 2.0, which provides access four new APIs — Javascript, Accelerometer, Data Logging and Persistent Storage.

Want to gift Pebble to a friend? All five colors are now in stock at getpebble.com with free priority shipping. Questions about the update process? Visit our support center right here.

Introducing iOS 7 notifications and Pebble SDK 2.0

It’s been a very exciting year for Pebble. There are now over 190,000 Pebbles on wrists everywhere, we’ve built strong retail partnerships with Best Buy and AT&T, and we’ve grown our team — all thanks to wonderful Pebble users like you. For those who don’t have a Pebble yet, all five colors are in stock at getpebble.com and for a limited time we’re offering free priority shipping (5-7 days worldwide).

Of course, it takes more than hardware to make a great smartwatch and we’ve been working closely with developers worldwide to help them create thousands of apps for Pebble customers on both iOS and Android. While we’re proud of these achievements, we’ve been working hard to take Pebble to the next level. Today we’re announcing new software that’s going to make Pebble even more useful.

First, we’re introducing a more delightful user experience for Pebble customers using iOS. Pebble is now fully integrated with iOS 7 and works seamlessly with Notification Center. This means that any notifications you’ve enabled in Notification Center on your iOS 7 device will appear on your Pebble — just like that. It’s easier than ever to pick and choose which updates you want to see on your watch. This includes notifications beyond calls, texts and emails, such as Calendar, Twitter, Facebook, Google+, Instagram, LinkedIn, Flickr, Dropbox, WhatsApp, Flipboard and more. A new Pebble app for iOS will enable this functionality and is under review by Apple. Expect an update in the iTunes Store soon.

Here’s a video that shows what iOS 7 support looks like.

Second, we’re launching Pebble SDK 2.0, which makes it even easier for developers to build awesome Pebble apps. SDK 2.0 opens up an entire universe of rich new watch apps thanks to four new APIs: Javascript, Accelerometer, Data Logging and Persistent Storage. These API allow developers to make Pebble apps that interface directly with the web (real-time weather, transit info, location check-in), access the accelerometer (health/fitness monitoring and gesture-based remote control), log data when disconnected from the phone (health/fitness tracking), and store info on the watch (high scores for games, settings). You can find out more about SDK 2.0 on the Pebble developer blog.

This is just the beginning. Seamless integration with iOS 7 is one of many ways we’re continuously improving Pebble’s user experience. While we’re just starting to roll out SDK 2.0, we already have some amazing watch apps in the works from partners like iControl, Foursquare, GoPro and Yelp. Pebble’s always been an open platform and we can’t wait to see what else developers create with SDK 2.0 — there’s a lot more to come.

Until then, we know you like numbers, so here are a few:

  • Number of Pebbles on wrists worldwide: 190,000
  • Number of apps and faces downloaded: 2 million
  • Number of apps and faces on mypebblefaces.com: 2,200
  • Number of watchfaces created on watchface-generator.de: 80,000
  • Number of companion apps available on the iTunes and Google Play stores: 50+
  • Number of developers: 10,000+
