Pebble’s Next Step

NOTE: This post has been updated to clarify refund timing for eligible backers receiving pledge reimbursements from Kickstarter.

Dear Pebblers,

Thank you all for being such loyal supporters and champions of the Pebble community and brand. You helped start something fantastic when you backed our first Kickstarter project (and shout-out to the first inPulse users). Since then, we’ve shipped over 2 million Pebbles around the world!

However—due to various factors—Pebble is no longer able to operate as an independent entity. We have made the tough decision to shut down the company and no longer manufacture Pebble devices. This news has several major implications, and we hope to answer as many questions as possible here, in Kickstarter Update #17, and on our Support site.

Pebble 2: Fit & Smart

Pebble 2, the most complete wearable experience we’ve ever developed, is ready for your wrist!

Meet the Pebble 2 + Heart Rate family.

Meet the Pebble 2 + Heart Rate family.

The original Pebble put wearable technology on the map in 2012, inspiring others to follow our lead as we explored how wearable technology fits into our lives best. Pebble 2 is the ultimate expression of our approach to wearables: first-class fitness features coupled with the essential smartwatch experience we pioneered.

Pebble 2 is a long-lasting, water-resistant sports watch that’s thinner, lighter, and stronger than the original Pebble. It’s a focused, fun wearable that makes staying active, sleeping smarter, and nurturing healthy habits easier.

Pebble 2 + Heart Rate unifies the two experiences our community wants most: fitness tracking and time-saving convenience. No other band or smartwatch comes close to blending fit and smart together so beautifully for only $129.99.

Whether you’re psyched to live healthier or want to bring order to your digital life, Pebble 2 passes the test with flying colors.

Pebble Core = More Awesome with Amazon Alexa Expansion in the UK and Germany

“Alexa, is your Pebble Core integration available anywhere new?”

Today, thanks to our friends at Amazon, those in the UK and Germany can enjoy Alexa’s voice-enabled skills when Pebble Core starts shipping in 2017.

Pebble Core + Alexa

Amazon Alexa is a powerful, cloud-based service that makes everyday tasks a breeze with simple voice commands. Alexa has only gotten smarter and more useful with time, and its expansion into the UK and Germany is amazing news for folks in that region excited for Pebble Core.

Our engineering team is already building Alexa Voice Services (AVS) into Pebble Core, using Amazon’s Alexa Skill Kit (ASK). ASK makes up the tools developers use to expand what Alexa-enabled devices can do, from controlling smart home devices to telling you funny jokes.

“Voice integration has opened up countless opportunities for wearables, and it’s great to see Amazon bring the Alexa Skill Kit and Alexa Voice Services to developers in even more markets around the globe,” said Eric Migicovsky, CEO of Pebble. “At Pebble, we’re big fans of Alexa, and we’re excited to be working with Amazon to bring Alexa to Pebble Core, not only in the US, but now in the UK and Germany as well.”

Open, Collaborative, Crowdsourced: Meet the Pebble Health Wellness Platform

“Big things have small beginnings.”

Pebble on Kickstarter

Pebble’s dedicated wellness ecosystem got its start when Pebble Health launched last year with step and sleep tracking, and we’ve worked tirelessly to evolve it further.

Today, we’re introducing our vision for a world-class suite of services for developing and nurturing healthy habits. No matter where we are in our fitness journeys, we can all use help in living healthier and happier—whether that’s by managing stress, staying active, getting the right vitamins and nutrients, or taking time for reflection.

Introducing Open Health for Healthier Habits

Health’s place in the world of wearable technology is still uncharted territory—there’s much to discover and many questions to answer. No one yet knows exactly which services will work best for people, or how to best deliver a tailored, personalized experience that goes beyond cookie-cutter “solutions.” As part of our mission to pioneer and build the best wearable experiences imaginable, we’re making the Pebble Health platform more open and collaborative than ever.

Happiness App

How to be Happy: Experiments in tracking mood and energy

Last year, Pebble introduced built-in activity tracking as the foundation of our new Health app. But health is so much more than steps and sleep. For the past several months, we’ve been brainstorming about what’s next for Pebble Health. I’d like to share with you the results of our first internal experiment: The Happiness App.

Our motivation behind this project was to understand how our mood and energy levels fluctuated throughout the day. Was there a natural pattern or weekly cadence? Could we visualize our personalities based on these fluctuations?

Pebble Sleep Data Demonstrates Biological Phenomena

Do you bounce out of bed happily with the morning sun, or do you hit the snooze button 5 times before zombie-walking to the shower? Asked another way… Do you think that the early bird gets the worm, or does the second mouse get the cheese? The correct answer is… It depends! It depends on your chronotype. So what is chronotype?

Opening the Black Box: Publishing Pebble’s activity-tracking algorithms

This is a guest post by Nathaniel Stockham, a Ph.D. student in Neuroscience at Stanford University.

When I started my study of bipolar disorder, I spent an inordinate amount of time comparing different devices, each differing in ease of use, reliability, battery life, remote access, and cost. What eventually led me to Pebble was my need to know exactly what was being calculated.

After reviewing dozens of commercial and clinical devices, I determined the most important variables to measure and designed two algorithms to capture the most salient motion characteristics. After months of validation in collaboration with Pebble and the Stanford Wearables Lab, I am making these two algorithms available to the public to encourage the use of a standard set of measures.
